    Bo Staff

Like many of the modern karate weapons, the bo (or bo staff) originated on the Japanese island of Okinawa. When a weapons ban, enforced on peasant farmers by the ruling class, left Okinawans without a means to protect themselves, they began learning how to use everyday tools for self-defense. The bo came from a pole used for carrying buckets of water over the shoulders.  Bo staffs are still used in karate today. One of the most popular versions is the sport karate bo, which is usually tapered, lightweight for quick movements, and covered with shiny wrap or bright paint. Others are made with hardwood, for strength development, or foam, for light partner training.
